Universal Health Coverage Day
Revitalizing Universal Health Coverage: A Call to Action
In light of the recent Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day celebrations, it’s crucial to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving health for all by 2030. This year’s theme, “Health for All: Time for Action,” serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for immediate steps towards strengthening health systems worldwide.
Building upon the momentum generated by the second high-level meeting on UHC at the United Nations General Assembly and WHO’s 75th anniversary, the focus now shifts to accelerating progress towards UHC. The ’12 Days of UHC’ campaign conducted in December highlighted key aspects and actions for advancing universal health coverage in the Region.
While significant progress has been made in increasing the UHC service coverage index, particularly in the Western Pacific Region, challenges persist. Despite the index rising from 49 to 79 between 2000 and 2021, financial protection in the region has worsened, with more households facing catastrophic health expenditures or out-of-pocket payments beyond their means.
In 2000, 1 in 10 families in the Western Pacific faced catastrophic health expenditures. Today, that number has doubled, with 1 in 5 families unable to afford essential care. These financial hardships, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, underscore the urgent need for equitable access to essential health services without imposing undue financial burdens on individuals and families.
As we commemorate UHC Day 2023, it’s imperative to recognize and celebrate the progress made while acknowledging the persistent inequities in service coverage and financial hardship. The campaign aims not only to raise awareness but also to empower individuals and civil societies to actively engage policymakers in delivering on their UHC commitments.
Looking ahead, the upcoming webinar hosted by WHO on December 12, 2023, presents an invaluable opportunity to delve deeper into the progress towards universal health coverage. Speakers, including experts from countries in the region, will share findings from the new report, “Progress towards universal health coverage: improving financial protection in the Western Pacific Region.”
In conclusion, as we embark on this journey towards achieving health for all, let us heed the call to action embedded in this year’s UHC Day theme. By prioritizing immediate and tangible steps, we can pave the way for a healthier and more equitable future for all.
